Merry Xmas: Books Given & Received

Books as part of my Xmas gift-giving? Really?

Oh, come on. Don’t look so surprised! Of course books are my favorite presents to give AND receive. So I thought for today, I’d show you some of what passed in and out of my hands, and my family’s hands, this holiday.

What I Gave

To my son, the latest in Scott Westerfeld’s steampunk trilogy, Goliath.

He also got, via my recommendation to the grandparents, Terry Pratchett’s latest: Snuff.

To my husband, Colleen Mondor’s The Map of My Dead Pilots: The Dangerous Game of Flying in Alaska.

To my dad (knowing very well that Mom will read this, too!), Robert Bothwell’s Canada and Quebec: One Country, Two Histories.

Big Sister got Sarah Stewart Taylor’s Judgment of the Grave.

And Little Sister got Debra Schultz’ Going South: Jewish Women in the Civil Rights Movement.

Others got various pieces of Simon R. Green’s Nightside series, Adam Rex’s The True Meaning of Smekday, and Kenneth Oppel’s This Dark Endeavor.

Okay, that’s about….What? What’s that?

What did I get? Oh, yeah!

Stacy Schiff’s Cleopatra: A Life

…and Sara Zarr’s How to Save a Life.

(Gee, I wonder how my guys knew what books I wanted!)

Hope you all got books you wanted, and here’s to some wonderful end-of-year reading time!

Sounds like a lovely book-filled Christmas all around! I have a few picture books stacked up ready to give as “apres-Christmas” gifts (including the two Very Fairy Princess books, an airplane board book by Susanna Leonard Hill, Press Here, and Dumpy the Dump Truck). For Christmas, I no longer have many people to give to, nor to receive from, but I made sure I got some books for Christmas anyway — from me! Three chapter books for a little genre-reading, and “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Book Proposals and Query Letters”. Can you guess what’s in my future?

I didn’t get ANY books. WAH! I think people don’t give me books because I read so much, they’re afraid I’ll have already read it . . . I did give lots of books though.

To older daughter: Havoc (sequel to Malice one of her favorite books), a book of short stories from authors including Sherry Shahan and Cecil Castelluci, and All the Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn.

To younger daughter: The Golden Compass, The Mystic Phyles, and Old Willis Place by Hahn.

To husband: the latest book by Christopher Moore and Jon Krakuer

And they are all busy reading away today . . .

However, I just preordered John Green’s new book so that’ll be my present to myself!

I think this has been my problem many years, too, Cathe. This year I just emailed “suggestions” to my husband and son! 🙂
